New Year’s Eve
A party in the fellowship area. Singing of hymns, table
games, snacks, a fun gift exchange, prayer at midnight.
Warm-Weather Workdays
The second Saturday morning of each month, May
through September. Open to
all — old and young, men and women, boys and girls.
Sprucing up both building and grounds (mowing, weed pulling, shrub trimming,
tree pruning, baptistry cleaning, window washing, necessary minor repairs and
maintenance, etc.). Donuts, coffee, juices, good fellowship and the satisfaction
of a vital job done well make these workdays memorable and enjoyable.
Thanksgiving
Service
On Wednesday night before Thanksgiving Day. An
evening of songs, prayers, scripture readings and short talks expressive of our
gratitude for the uncountable blessings flowing from the Father’s hand.
Ladies’
Studies and Retreats
Several ladies meet on Tuesday night each
week at the Lees’ home for Bible study, except during the summer months. Ladies
have held a number of weekend retreats at a mountain location, usually in the
autumn.
"Summer Excitement."
Since the 1980’s, with a few exceptions, we have
helped our teenagers and some of their friends attend the annual "Summer
Excitement" leadership training program, first at Dallas, now at Lubbock. Our
help has been extended through money-raising projects such as yard sales and car
washes in the parking lot, through subsidizing a portion of the tuition in some
cases, and through providing transportation or helping with transportation
costs.
Annual Themes
For a number of years we have selected an annual "theme"
for the congregation — some subject or phase of Christian living to be
emphasized throughout the year. Besides being the focus of several sermons
during the year, the theme is displayed on our annual calendar and in the weekly
bulletin. Themes originate from members’ suggestions.
Some of our past themes: "We Are Family," "Love and Unity," and "O to Be Like
Thee!" Perhaps the most unusual theme activity occurred in the year 2000. Our
theme was "Count Your Blessings," and we decided to count at least "2000
blessings in 2000." We placed poster-size beige cardboard sheets on a table,
with numbered lines for recording blessings. As each sheet was filled by the
members, we mounted it on a wall of the fellowship area, so that at year’s end
we had posters covering most of two walls, containing a list of 2000 blessings.
We saved them and transcribed the blessings to a notebook which became part of
our permanent files. Since that time we have provided a "blessing book" in a
convenient place for people to use in recording things for which they are
particularly grateful.
Church Calendar
Our annual calendar lists meeting times and our
families’ birthdays and wedding anniversaries, and in recent years has also
featured articles by the members pertaining to the annual theme. Thus the
calendar is both practical and inspirational for year-long use.
