Special Days and Activities

Graduates’ Day

Honoring our folks who are graduating from high school, college or a vocational or technical school, on a Sunday in May. Potluck lunch together, with the fellowship area appropriately decorated and the graduates at a table of honor, followed by presentation of the congregation’s gift to each graduate (usually a Bible or a related book), followed by opening of graduates’ other gifts from members.

Can Opening Day

Usually the first Sunday in December. Lunch together, followed by opening our Ukraine collection cans, dumping the contents onto large tables, counting the money, and getting it ready for deposit. (The collection cans are sent to us by the Ukraine Mission Board in the early fall each year. A number of congregations receive the cans, and the collections, amounting to as much as $16,000 per year, are used to support missionary work in Sumy and Kiev, Ukraine.)

New Year’s Eve

A party in the fellowship area. Singing of hymns, table games, snacks, a fun gift exchange, prayer at midnight.

Warm-Weather Workdays

The second Saturday morning of each month, May through September. Open to all — old and young, men and women, boys and girls. Sprucing up both building and grounds (mowing, weed pulling, shrub trimming, tree pruning, baptistry cleaning, window washing, necessary minor repairs and maintenance, etc.). Donuts, coffee, juices, good fellowship and the satisfaction of a vital job done well make these workdays memorable and enjoyable.

Ladies’ Studies and Retreats

Several ladies meet on Tuesday night each week at the Lees’ home for Bible study, except during the summer months. Ladies have held a number of weekend retreats at a mountain location, usually in the autumn.

Annual Themes

For a number of years we have selected an annual "theme" for the congregation — some subject or phase of Christian living to be emphasized throughout the year. Besides being the focus of several sermons during the year, the theme is displayed on our annual calendar and in the weekly bulletin. Themes originate from members’ suggestions.

Some of our past themes: "We Are Family," "Love and Unity," and "O to Be Like Thee!" Perhaps the most unusual theme activity occurred in the year 2000. Our theme was "Count Your Blessings," and we decided to count at least "2000 blessings in 2000." We placed poster-size beige cardboard sheets on a table, with numbered lines for recording blessings. As each sheet was filled by the members, we mounted it on a wall of the fellowship area, so that at year’s end we had posters covering most of two walls, containing a list of 2000 blessings. We saved them and transcribed the blessings to a notebook which became part of our permanent files. Since that time we have provided a "blessing book" in a convenient place for people to use in recording things for which they are particularly grateful.

Our 2010 theme is:
Sharing God
