<itunes:summary>John 4:19-26
Worship is the reverent love for God and the forms by which it is expressed. Isaiah 6:1-3, Rev. 4:1-5:14. God is calling us to worship him. God is never confused about what he wants, but sometimes we are confused about worshiping in spirit and truth (John 4:19-26). "Where should be worshiping?" is the question from the Samaritan woman asked Jesus. Jesus says the place isn't what's important, but the participation of the heart and the Spirit in worship.
Being Spiritual People

1 Cor 2:10-15 - The Holy Spirit has come from God to you. The spirit of the world is removed and replaced by God's Holy Spirit to make us spiritual people. Go inside and repent, change, and orient towards God.
Rom. 12:1 - Present yourself to God as a physical sacrifice to his service.
1 Peter 2:4-5 - We are living stones to build a Spiritual temple for sacrifice to God - sacrifices of praise that come from our inner beings. Heb. 13:16.
The Fruit of God's Spirit Within

John 7:37-39 - (Acts 2) - The Spirit of God is Poured out on mankind. Jesus says that people will never be thirsty. Part of the rivers of living water is praises for God (Eph. 5:18).
Acts 7:51 - Stephen says that these men were resisting the Spirit of God.
1 Thess. 5:16-20 - Don't quench the Spirit. We have a choice - seek the Spirit or quench the Spirit.
Becoming Spiritual People

John 3:38 - Be born of the Spirit. Allow God to work within us by being born of the Spirit. We are no longer bound to the physical world, but to God's Spirit.
1 Peter 1:22-23 - We can change our hearts by reading the word of God.
Gal. 3:1-3 -Receive the Spirit by faith in the word of God. The word will perfect you. Have a spiritual mindset to worship God in spirit.

Who is Good?

1 Cor. 4:3-5 - God judges motives of the heart. It is easier to judge others than to judge ourselves.

Romans 3:21-26 - Our separation from God is because of our sin. God has provided a way to him through Jesus. God wants us to be his children and has given us a gift in his Son Jesus. To experience closeness with God we must respond to his invitation.
Is it too late for us to have a relationship with God? Have we sinned too much?

2 Cor. 5:16-19 - There are still opportunities to serve God and experience his blessings. All things are reconciled in the world by Christ's sacrifice. Believe God and have hope.
Isaiah 43:18-21 - These people had suffered consequences of failure and God said don't think about the past. God makes a way back to him (Joel 2:25).
Because of God broken human relationships can be healed. Trust in God.</itunes:summary>

We all experience suffering in this world. Jesus came to give us hope. Jesus had an encounter with a rich young ruler that teaches about hope in this world (Mark 10:17-31). Jesus responds to the rich young ruler, Why do you call me good? Only God is good.
The Goodness of God

Genesis 1:32 - God created the world and he said it was good. It was good because God made it. Sin has now left its mark on the physical world.
Exodus 33:18-19, 34:57 - Moses wanted to see God, but God made his goodness pass by Moses because he couldn't look on God's face. God describes himself as compassionate, gracious, truthful, and moving against sin.
Psalm 106:1-2, 119:68, 145:8-9 - God is good and merciful to all. Do we believe in the goodness of God? Do we believe in God's goodness when we are suffering? Do we live our lives every day like God is good and merciful to us? Live your life with hope because of God.
We are not God (or perfectly good)

Rom. 3:9-18 - No one is that good. All have sinned. No human can claim he or she is as good as God.
Rom. 7:18 - Paul says nothing good dwells in me. We can't be good enough on our own.
1 John 1:8 - We can fool ourselves about our sin. When it comes to sin it isn't a comparison between people. It doesn't matter if you are better than someone else; we are still not as good as God. We can't get to eternal life without God. We can't work our way to eternal life.
God Saves Us

Mark 10:23-27, Matt. 19:23-26, Luke 18:24-27 -The rich have all the physical advantages, but not the spiritual advantages. People can't get to eternal life without God.
Rom 3:23-24 - God gives us hope when we are hopeless.

Luke 18:9-14 - God exalts the humble. When we see ourselves clearly and have faith in God, that's the way to eternal life.

God's Amazing Love for difficult people

Deut. 32 :( 1-43) 15-18 - Moses sums up the people's response to God's love as saying they forgot the God who gave them birth.
1 Sam. 8:7-9 -The people wanted a king. God says the people are rejecting God as a leader in favor of an earthly king.
Neh. 9:26-29 - God had given the people great blessings, but the people did evil before God.
Jer. 44:4-6 -The people would not listen to God.
Matt. 21:33-43 - This story tells about a vineyard that was worked by the people and the people refused to give what was due the owner. They rejected the owner.
Acts 7:51-52 -These people were called stiff necked.
God is loving and merciful to us. Cats (and people) can be difficult! Cats can be trained. If this is true maybe people can be transformed.
People can be transformed

Jer. 3:17 - God has hope that we can be changed from our stubborn ways.
Romans 8:13 - Because God has given his son we can turn away from sin and live.
2 Cor. 3:18 - We are being changed by the Spirit if we focus on Jesus.
Eph. 4:20-5:2 - Be renewed in the Spirit.
We are called to be a new person in the image of Christ. God calls us to learn to want to please Him.
Developing a Desire to Please God

Heb. 13:16 - Do the things that please God.
1 Thess. 4:1 -Walk in a way that pleases God.
Col. 1:9-12 - Please God in all respects. Enjoy a relationship with God.
Eph. 5:7-10, 6:5-8 - Try to learn what is pleasing to God by walking in the light and imitating Christ.

<itunes:summary>What's a place you'd like to see - the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, Switzerland, or Egypt? Do you want to see God as much as this place? What are you willing to do?
Desiring to see God

Ex. 33:18-23 - God allowed Moses to see the glory of God even though he couldn't come face to face with God.
John 14:7-10 - When you have seen Jesus you've seen God. These people got what Moses never had.
Rev. 22:3-4 -This is the promise to all people who believe - You will see God face to face. We will have his name written on our foreheads.
Today we can see God through people at work doing his business.
A Need for Holiness

Psalm 11:7 (17:15) - The righteous can see God
Isaiah 33:15-17 - The upright shall see God
Matt. 5:8 - The pure of heart shall see God
Heb. 12:4-14 - God deals with those who have faith. God corrects us so that we can share his holiness. Go after holiness in your life so that you can see God.
Do you want to have a life full of purity or a life full of pollution? Just as we choose pure water to drink physically we need to choose holiness in our Spiritual lives.
Pursuing Holiness

1 Peter 1:13-16 - Be holy in all your behavior like God.
1 John 3:2-3 -We are children of God and we must purify ourselves because he is pure.
1 Thess. 4:7 - God has called us to be set apart to be like him.
To keep our cars clean we wash the car and we keep from driving in dirty places. If we are serious about Spiritual purity, we are washed by God and we avoid sinful situations. We are going to sin, so we need God's grace. To be pure we need both God's grace and avoiding sin.

1 Cor. 9:24-27 -Paul was disciplined so he could be saved. He was working at his purity.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This week was the beginning of the 2010 Winter Olympics. This is the venue for many feats of physical prowess. Some events are no longer part of the games. One event no longer part of the games is Tug-of-War. This can be fun or painful. Another type of Tug-of-War is emotional conflict. Churches today can become conflicted over different people's agendas.
Early Churches Involved in Tug-of-War

2 Tim. 1:6 - Be a mirror for one another. Encourage others in using their gifts
Developing Our Gifts

Even though God freely presents us with spiritual gifts we must put forth efforts to develop those gifts 1 Cor. 3:1-4 , Heb. 5:11
Use Our Gifts

1 Cor. 13:1-3 -Love is the motivation
1 Peter 5:8-11 -Overcome obstacles and use your gifts

1 Peter 5:2 - Shepherds should do this job willingly
James 5:13-15 - The sick should call on the elders to pray over them. The elders must make the visit. This is a spiritual blessing for the physically sick.
We are All to Visit One Another

Examples in the Book of Acts

Acts 6:1-7 -Overseeing food distribution. This church was experiencing diversity of culture and background which caused a problem. This problem needed to be dealt with. The congregation was lead to solve the problem without neglecting the Word of God. The people chosen to lead were committed to the word and they were chosen by the congregation. The qualities they had were to be of good reputation (moral), full of the Spirit (spiritual), and to be full of wisdom (practical). The congregation brought these people to the apostles who lay on their hands.
Acts 14:21-23 -Appointing elders was essential to keep the Church going forward. These people were appointed after prayer and fasting.
Qualities of Elders and Deacons

1 Tim. 3:1-13 - The first quality of a leader is to want to do the job for good of the kingdom. A leader must have these qualities. How close are you to meeting these qualities? These qualifications are what it looks like to be moral, spiritual, and practically wise. Putting this in practice today is challenging.
Titus 1:5 - Elders must be above reproach and hold fast the word. This is not a check list when appointing leaders. Leaders must demonstrate wisdom and be full of the Spirit.
Older Women

Titus 2:3-5 -Must have a good reputation, must be wise, and full of the Spirit
1 Tim. 5:5 , 9-10 - Women pray night and day. A woman at this stage of life is a spiritual powerhouse.
Paul's Objective

1 Tim. 1:5 - The goal is love
All Christians should be striving to achieve the qualities of Christian leaders.</itunes:summary>

Judges17:6, 21:25 -There was no leader in Israel. Everyone did what they thought was right..
Isaiah 53:4-6 - People always go astray without a leader -- like sheep without a Shepard
Zechariah 13:7 - The Shepard will die and the sheep will fall away. (Jesus and his disciples) Matt. 26:31 .
Leaders Should Protect

Acts 20:28-31 - Paul says to watch out for themselves and for the others. He pleads with the leaders to do their jobs.
Titus 1:10-16 - Why were elders important? There were people who wanted to lead others astray. We are surrounded by evil and we need people who will point out evil.
We need leaders in today's church that are willing to confront evil.
Leaders must be respected

1 Thess. 5:12-13 - Hold our leaders in high regard
Heb. 13:17 - Obey leaders. We must make the job of the leader as easy as possible.
If we are an obstacle to leadership we are accountable for our actions.
Leaders are essential in the Church today.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>We never know when we might be able to testify about Jesus. Recently, one of our Christian brothers, Colt McCoy, quarterback for the University of Texas, gave a tremendous testimony saying God is in control and that his life s built on the rock. Let us be ready.
Pressure from Unbelievers

John 7:13 - Some say he is good man. No one was speaking publicly for fear of the Jews.
John 9:20-23 - The parents of the blind man were afraid of being cast out of the synagogue.
John 12:42-43 - The people were kept quiet about Jesus because the leaders were putting people's approval before God's approval.
1 Peter 4:15-16 - If you suffer because of Jesus you will be blessed.
Good and Bad Shame

Romans 6:21 - There are things that are bad in our lives that should cause shame. We can repent ad relieve our shame.
Mark 8:34-38 (Luke 9:23-26 ) - Jesus says we hurt ourselves when we are ashamed of the name of Jesus and his ways. Have faith that God will help you to speak up.
Matt. 10:32-33 - We have a choice to confess or deny Jesus. Silence is denial. Faith lets us speak. Jesus talks to God about us the way we talk to others about him.
Paul's Example

Romans 1:16-17 - Paul says he wasn't ashamed of the gospel. He took every chance to speak about the gospel. Paul says he couldn't do it on his own he needed the saving power of the gospel.
2 Tim. 1:8-14 -Join with me in suffering for the gospel. We may suffer negative consequences for our confession.
God Not Ashamed of Us

Heb. 2:11-13 , 17 - Jesus is not ashamed of us. He became like us.
Heb. 11:16 - God loved us and has prepared a place for us.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>We are beginning a new theme - Sharing God. Will we have amazing encounters with God, like Moses had with God and the burning bush?
Knowing God

Exodus 33:13 - Moses encountered God and wanted to know God's ways and his commandments. Moses had a relationship with God.
John 17:3 - This is eternal life that we know God.
2 Peter 1:2 - Grace and peace are multiplied with the knowledge of God.
1 John 4:7-10 -Love is from God and those that love know God.
When you go and experience something you learn so much more than if you just read about it or see pictures. When you get close to something or someone you find out so much more.

What we will experience with God in 2010?
Seeking God

1 Chronicles 28:9 - If you seek God, he will be found by you.
Psalm 19:9-10 -Seek God with all your heart.
Matt. 7:7-8 -Ask God and Seek Him.
Heb. 11:6 - Come to God and Believe who he is.
How much trouble would you go to looking for lost money? We put value on things we believe are worth it. Our intensity in seeking is directly related to how much we value him.
Being Transformed by God

2 Cor. 3:14-18 - When we turn to God we are changed
Rom. 12:2 , Eph. 2:10 - God changes us to be like Jesus
Our goal is to move closer to what God wants us to be. God will help us grow.
God is seeking us and we must seek him. We will know him better and develop a close relationship with him.
What can you do to know God better in 2010?</itunes:summary>
