“Morning by morning, O Lord, you hear my voice”
First Things First
(Please read Matthew 6:33)
In our busy world there are numerous demands on our time and energy. For us to do everything we wish to do or that people expect us to do is an impossibility. We are obliged, therefore, to select and eliminate. We should select things of prime importance and eliminate from our lives things that are minor. What things are first, of prime importance? The Master gives the answer, placing emphasis where it belongs.
As our text indicates, God’s kingdom and his righteousness are of paramount importance. That’s easy to see if we recall that Christ died for it, it is his body and it is his bride. So righteousness should be placed ahead of moneymaking, principle ahead of gain, God before mammon (see John 10:17 and following). More specifically, reconciliation should come before worship, before we offer anything to God – whether prayer, songs of praise, money or some other thing. The Lord accepts no gift from a heart of malice (see Matthew 5:23-24).
Continuing this line of thought, the command to love is above any other commandment, and comprehends them all (Matthew 22:34-39; Romans 13:8-10).
You take it from there and find other things which should be first in our lives. May God bless you as you examine your own priorities and follow through with any necessary rearrangements – beginning this very day.
