If it could be said that we get along with others, this life would be better for all. Jesus spent time talking about relationships and gave ideas about how to get along well with others.
Don’t Be Judgmental
Why did Jesus start with negativity? Jesus was sure everyone was guilty of this. He also knew there were scribes and Pharisees in the audience.
Jesus didn’t mean that all judgment should be done away with. Civil courts, empowered to judge, are established by God. Romans 13:1,1 Peter 2:13-14
Personal judgment is required to follow Jesus’ teaching about pearls before swine, and false prophets. Jesus meant critize, and this as applied in a negative way.
Biases and prejudices distort our judgment. John 1:46. Jesus doesn’t want us to make judgments without all the facts.
The impossible judgment is assigning motives to others as the reason why people do what they do. It’s impossible for us to know motives; only God knows for sure. 1Cor. 2:11.
Harsh judgment is a human failing. We should hitewash the situation with love as best we can. 1 Peter 4:8.
First, Correct Ourselves
Matt. 7:3-4. Speck in our eye. To get along with others we have to discover what’s wrong with ourselves. David had to do this. Psalm 51. We forgive ourselves, but we assign fault to others for those same deeds. 2 Corn.13: 5.
Help Others Humbly, Sensitively
Galatians 6:10. If you have something in your eye .you want someone to be super careful in removing it. James 5:19-20.
Learn How to Deal with Different Kinds of People
Pigs and dogs are unclean and ordinarily run in packs. Pigs eat vegetables and meat and can be dangerous. This is an illustration of a person who will turn and trample you. These people will take what is holy and devour it without comprehension. The kingdom of heaven is holy and the word is holy. Don’t waste the Word on people who are defiled and unbelieving. We need to deal with different people differently. Matt. 10. The people who are willing to spread the gospel are a precious resource to God. Don’t spend all your time with those who are set to reject the gospel.
Rely on God’s Help
God will help us when we get confused about what is good. We need to pray for God to help us with our judgments.
Live by The Golden Rule
This is what sums up the previous rules. Before this, the Rule had been understood negatively— that is, don’t do to others what you would not want them to do to you. By stating the principle positively Jesus takes away the self-protection motive and gives way to self-giving. We want to be wise enough to apply this in our daily requests.
