Living for Jesus in Family Relationships
—By Barb Plucheck
Living for Jesus in our homes can be possible! Do we believe the New Testament teachings of Christ? Jesus said that God’s first and most important command is to love the Lord God with all the heart, soul and mind. That means to put him – Christ – and his teachings first in your life. The only way we can accomplish this is to first deny self and be willing to suffer for doing righteousness and goodness.
When husbands love their wives as their own bodies and women obey their husbands, the children will be more given to honoring their parents. And by following God’s commands, parents can instill a love for truth in their children. When we follow this pattern of God, we show how much we truly love God.
Let us put away our own wants to the bottom of the list, and do what we can for our mothers and fathers in their years of aging. Spend time with them, which is their greatest need. When we think also about one’s spouse or children, are not their greatest needs for each one to give time to the others. We all crave the close ties of family, and this closeness has to be given the element of time! We may have to give up some personal activities to accomplish this. Family closeness can be nurtured also by having family devotionals frequently.
Yes — living for Jesus requires self-denial and love of God in meeting the needs of family relationships.
