Our Theme for 2005:
Living for Jesus
Living for Jesus with Courage
—by Michael Dorsey
Christians find that living for Jesus victoriously requires great courage. When we look at an example of that type of courage we can look at Deuteronomy 31:6, where the word of God says, “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” We must remember that our God will always be with us in good times and in times of trouble, where we will need courage.
We also find in the scriptures, especially in Acts, where Stephen was stoned for preaching Christ and Paul was imprisoned for also preaching Christ (Acts 7:54-60), individuals who displayed great courage. As Christians we should also exemplify our courage to the world. The Bible is clear that God’s accepted time is today (Hebrews 3:15; 4:7, 2 Corinthians 6:2). The reason for this is very simple — a sinner has no assurance whatsoever that he will live to see tomorrow. Thus as Christians we are to witness any time, all the time, in any place and in all places, when God give us the opportunity to do so. The great example of this was the apostle Paul; he truly lived for Christ with courage.
It takes courage to die for Christ, but it also takes courage to live for Him. That’s why Paul said that God hasn’t “given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7) When going through this year trust in God’s promises and rely on His Spirit. That’s how you can face each new challenge with courage and confidence. Thank God for the courage He has given you in the past, and asks Him to help you face future spiritual battles without retreat or compromise.
May God bless our congregation.
