The Power of Listening
If we are going to learn to speak righteously, we must learn to listen.
- Born of God’s Word (vs. 18)
We must listen first of all to God’s word.
John 1:1, 12-13
- Be Quick to Hear (vs. 19)
Be ready or prepared to hear or listen so we can respond as God wants us to. Listening is a difficult job. We must have an open heart for God’s word. Communication between Christians is not a competition. Romans 12:15
- Be Slow to Speak (vs. 19)
If I’m talking I can’t listen. A car is very dangerous if there are no breaks. Our speech is dangerous if we don’t listen.
- Be Slow to Anger (vs. 19-20)
Anger keeps you from doing God’s will. Anger works against love. Be fast to get over anger. Ephesians 4:26-27, 31
- Remove Evil and Implant God’s Word (vs. 21)
We hear God with our heart. Sin muffles God. We need to get rid of the things that block God and his word. The word helps us get rid of the sin in our lives. We need to be willing to let go of our sin and let God’s word work with us. 2 Cor. 7:1, Matt. 13:1-23
In our society it is difficult to turn off distractions and focus on God’s word.
- Hearing “To Do” (vs. 22-25)
If all we do is listen and don’t change, we haven’t heard.
Luke 8:21; 11:28
- Pure Religion Is (vs. 26-27)
-A Bridled Tongue
-Visiting Those in Need
-Keeping Pure from the World
