Our salvation is a two-person job.
These people were trying to be righteous without God. Without God, people cannot be righteous.
Righteousness without God can lead to arrogance or despondency. Luke 18:9-12, 2 Cor. 7:10

The correct equation is to begin with a relationship with God to be righteous. Romans 10:6-10
Salvation leads to eternal life. Eph. 2:8-9, John 10:27-28
Grace is a gift from God. Our acceptance of that grace leads us to a relationship with God.
The indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit leads us to produce the fruits of his love for us. Gal. 5:22-23
Humble yourself and he will exalt you. God is open to us when we turn to him.
