How to Live the Life That God Desires

Ephesians 4:17-6:9

Life Is a Walk – When this was written, walking was the most common means of getting from one place to another.  So walking is used as an important Biblical metaphor for life.

WALKING THE WALK – Ephesians 4:17-6:9

Similar Passages:  Romans 1:18-23, Colossians 3:5-11, 1 Peter 4:1-5

Life Is a Walk

•Ephesians 2:1-2a – Walking according to the course of this world.  Satan teaches to walk in

ways that are not of God.  There was a time when this was the only way

                                   they knew to walk.

“        2:10 – Good works prepared by God that we should walk in them.  God has prepared

                              another way to walk.

“        4:1 – Walk in a manner worthy of the calling.  God calls us.

“        4:17 – No longer walk as the Gentiles.  Do not continue in the ways of the world.

“        5:1-2a – Walk in love.  Have both a heart of love and deeds of love.

“        5:8 – Walk as children of light.  This is to walk confidently, with understanding.

“        5:15 – Be careful how you walk.  Even though we are in the light, we must still be

                              careful.

Life Is a Walk

•We choose where to walk

Matthew 7:13-14 – Wide and narrow ways.  This teaching is simple, yet profound.  God’s

gate may not look very important, especially to the unspiritual person.

Ephesians 4:17 – Paul insisted that they no longer walk in futility

•How we walk comes from within

Matthew 23:25-26 – Clean the inside of the dish.  Our life is a failure if we are not clean

within, no matter how we may look on the outside.

Ephesians 4:22-24 – Be renewed in the spirit of your mind.  The renewal must take place

within.  We need to know what is going on inside of us, in our inner thinking.

Walking Without GodEphesians 4:17-19 (cf. 2:1-3)  This is very sobering!

•Futility of mind

•Darkened in understanding

•Ignorance

•Hardness of heart

•Callous

Romans 8:7-8 – Those in the flesh cannot please God

Walking Without God: Consequences – Ephesians 4:18-19

•Excluded from the life of God – There is life that only God can give.

John 1:4 – In [Christ] is life

“    5:25-26 – Those who hear will live; the Son has life in himself

“    14:6 – I am the way, the truth, and the life

Romans 8:10 – If Christ is in you, the spirit is alive

2 Corinthians 4:16 – Our inner man is being renewed day by day.  This is a great contrast

between the physical and spiritual part of us.

•Given over to sensuality and impurity with greediness.  This is what happens when we try to

get “life” from a source other than God.  Personally, I have not discovered how to live without

God and not fall into some kind of addictive behavior.

Walking By God

•Paul’s prayers

Ephesians 1:15-16 – Making mention of you in my prayers.  Paul understood that walking in

          God’s ways requires his help.

Ephesians 3:14 – I bow my knees before the Father.  Acknowledging our weakness is what

          gives us strength.

•Truth is in Jesus

Ephesians 4:20-21 (truth is in Jesus), v. 22 (lusts of deceit, v. 24 (true righteousness).  To

          walk right requires God’s truth.

Galatians 3:27 – Baptized into Christ are clothed with Christ.  We need to surround ourselves

          with Jesus Christ.

Romans 13:14 – Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.  We need to put Christ into every part of our

          lives.

Colossians 3:10 – Put on a new self being renewed in the image [of God].  The Christian life

requires focusing on Jesus, who is perfect truth.  In this way the lied within us will be

replaced with truth.  It is a process of changing the way that we think.

2 Corinthians 3:18 – Transformed into the image of Christ

Hebrews 12:2 – Fixing our eyes on Jesus.  It is not wonder that we are exhorted to fix our

eyes on Jesus.  It sounds so simple, yet doing this will affect everything about our lives.

We are influenced by what we love.

Walking the Walk: Summary

•Choose God’s way

•Focus on Jesus, our source for truth

•Be renewed within

•Walk by God’s strength
